Tip Nº 01
The Mega Image on Strada Mureșenilor (3 min from Vintage Downtown, JugendStube and SECRET boutique) is open until 23:00 and stocks proper basics — pasta, smântână (sour cream), butter, eggs. The Lidl on Bulevardul Eroilor (closer to Transylvania Guest House) is cheaper for produce and bigger for meat but closes at 22:00.
Tip Nº 02
Sunday morning farmers' market at Piața Unirii is a 12-min walk from Old Town hostels — best for cheese, smoked sausage and the local pălincă plum brandy. Bring cash; nobody takes card.
Tip Nº 03
The unwritten kitchen etiquette is the same across all five real-kitchen Brașov hostels: leave what you don't finish (oils, pasta, salt), wash up immediately, and the 7-9 pm kitchen rush is the unofficial social hour. Show up to cook around 7 with extra of whatever you're making.
Tip Nº 04
Polenta (mămăligă) is the easiest Romanian-themed home-cook for a hostel kitchen — boil water, pour cornmeal, stir for 10 minutes. Pair with smântână (sour cream) and brânză (Romanian cheese) from the Mega Image. Total cost: 8 lei for two people.
