San Sebastián Hostels with a Bar — Where to Drink Inside the Hostel

Donostia is a pintxos-bars town, not a cocktail-bars town, and the four hostels with a real downstairs bar serve as warm-up rooms for the nightly Old Town crawl. A Room In The City's Centro lounge bar runs a pintxos counter and a cocktail list. Surfing Etxea's bar in Gros has txakoli on tap and a board-shaping bench. Koba's design bar serves Basqueland craft beer and is the only Donostia hostel bar that locals actually drink at. Cats Hostel's living-room bar opens to a balcony in residential Antiguo. The four cover every part of the city, every kind of pre-pintxos warm-up.

§ 01 — Traveler's take
Reviewers consistently mention the hostel bar as the night-one social anchor. Surfing Etxea's bar is repeatedly called 'where I made friends', Koba's is praised for the local presence ('not just travellers, real Donostia at the bar Friday night'), A Room In The City's for the pre-crawl staging, and Cats Hostel's for the balcony evenings. Travellers staying at non-bar hostels (Albergue Ulia, Colo Colo, Downtown River, UBA) consistently flag the missing bar as a social-network gap on night one — the hostels themselves push social interaction through kitchens or terraces, but the format is calmer.

§ 03 — Tips

Tips for Choosing a Hostel with Bar in San Sebastián

Tip Nº 01

Use the hostel bar as the 18:30-21:00 warm-up before Old Town pintxos, not as the destination — Donostia's real drinking is on Calle 31 de Agosto and Calle Fermín Calbetón from 21:00, hostel bars are pre-game and post-game.

Tip Nº 02

Koba's bar is the only one where Donostia regulars drop by Friday and Saturday from 22:00 — Basqueland Brewing IPA on tap, contemporary cocktails, locals come for the design polish. The other three are mostly traveller-staffed.

Tip Nº 03

Surfing Etxea's bar runs txakoli from the porrón (the high-pour Basque white wine glass) — €4 a glass, properly poured, the only Donostia hostel that does the real porrón service. Worth ordering even if you're more of a beer drinker.

Tip Nº 04

All four bars stage hostel pintxos crawls (€15-20, four pintxos + four drinks, meeting in the bar at 21:00 Tue-Sat). Sign up at reception by 19:00. The crawl is consistently better value than any Old Town tourist-window walk.
